This bulldog is in countless episodes and in the early years is usually
named Butch. It wasn't untill 1952 that "Spike" became the name of
choice. This is a shot from "Dog Trouble"... his first appearance. |

"Love That Pup" (left), 1949, marks the first appearance of Butch with
his son "pup".... later to be named Tyke. Spike and Tyke were later to
get a series of their own bearing their names. |

Though still great cartoons scenes like this from 1954's "Pet Peeve"
show that the UPA style was creeping into the Hanna/Barbera animation.
Heavier lines and less detail cut costs and most people didn't notice or
care. |
